TURKEY NAME NRL STARS FOR TEST AGAINST MALTA
In a contest that has been dubbed "The Great Siege" owing to the fierce history the two countries share, Malta and Turkey are preparing for their highly anticipated inaugural match against each other in October.
Whilst Malta coach Aaron McDonald has up until this stage kept his cards close to his chest on team selections, Turkey Head Coach Scott Hartas has made no secret that this upcoming battle carries a lot of meaning to it, as he recently named NRL Canberra Raiders stars Aidan Sezer and Emre Guler in his squad to face the Maltese.
It is inevitable that these nations finally cross paths as they both experienced some wonderful moments during their respective Emerging Nations World Championship campaigns last year and will return to the tournament venue, New Era Stadium for their historical fixture.
Turkey served up one of the tournament’s most exciting contests, as they edged out Vanuatu in a thriller to win 27-26 in golden point extra time for the 7th place playoff.
Malta also treated their fans to a treat as they overcome a spirited Hungary team in their last appearance at the Cabramatta venue, booking themselves a Cup final berth against tournament favourites Niue.
The Knights eventually defeating the Pacific Islanders 24-16 in a fitting grand finale at St Marys.
Both countries will play one test match each in the lead up to The Great Siege.
Turkey will meet Greece in a historic Men and Women’s double-header at the Aysekadin Yerleskesi Futbol Stadium in the city of Edirne on Saturday 14 September.
Malta re-ignite their rivalry with neighbours Italy on October 12th at Kirkham Park, Sydney.
