Fiji and PNG featured in the finals of both the men's and women's rugby league 9's events at the Pacific Games 2019 held in a rainy Apia Sports Stadium, Samoa. The competition was played over two days with the group stages on day one and placing games played on day two.
The women's final was only settled with the final play of the game when Fiji intercepted to score the winning try in their 16 - 4 victory.
Cook Islands defeated Samoa in the bronze medal game and Niue overcame Solomon Islands to decide fifth and sixth places.
In the men's competition, it was again Fiji versus the Cook Islands in the gold medal game. The two had met in the group stages yesterday with the Kumuls winning that one to top the group. The Bati however, reversed that result in the final to win 14 - 0.
Samoa defeated Tonga to take the bronze medal and in the hard-fought round-robin competition, the final places were sorted out after the Cook Island narrowly defeated Solomon Island and Tokelau to take fifth spot and Solomon Islands finished with a win against Tokelau to take a creditable sixth spot.
